Alberta's Best Waterfall Hikes

Hiking is the best way to see Alberta’s beautiful landscapes and some of the most rewarding hikes end at a stunning waterfall – or two, or three. Here’s a few for openers, ranked from easy to difficult.

Banff National Park Iconic Hikes
The powerful force of seven waterfalls has shaped Johnston Canyon into one of the most geologically fascinating areas in Banff National Park. Visitors can take the short hike to Johnston Canyon Lower Falls and decide whether to keep going to the impressive 30 m (98 ft) Johnston Canyon Upper Falls or even further to the colourful pools known as the Ink Pots. If you go the distance, allow 5 hours round trip.

The Bow Glacier Falls trailhead begins just behind Num-Ti-Jah Lodge on the north side of Bow Lake and runs along the lakeshore, offering beautiful views of Bow Lake, Bow Glacier and the Wapta Icefield  on the way to the base of Bow Falls, also a popular spot for ice climbing in winter. 2.5 hours round trip.

Hidden Gem Near Nordegg
The Siffleur Falls hike features a suspension bridge, a long wooden boardwalk and a wide gravel road leads to the Siffluer Falls Viewpoint in approximately 4 km (2.5 mi). Turn back here or keep going for two more sets of waterfalls that will take your breath away. Allow 4.5 hours return from the farthest falls.

Bucket List Hike in Waterton
The magnificent Crypt Lake Hike in Waterton Lakes National Park begins with a boat ride and features a steel ladder, an 18 m (60 ft) tunnel-crawl through a mountain and a short maneuver around a cliff using a cable. On the way to Crypt Lake, hikers pass four spectacular waterfalls. Allow six hours round trip.
