GO FURTHER, EXPLORE DEEPER – THE ‘SOLITUDE’ EXPERIENCE IS HERE
ADVENTURERS CAN NOW MAP OUT THEIR OWN 6 HOUR UNDERGROUND DISCOVERY, WITH THE LAUNCH OF PRIVATELY-GUIDED CAVE EXPLORATION
July 26, 2017 (Canmore, AB)
– Limitless caving experiences are now a reality, with ‘Solitude’. Six hours, one expert guide, one cave in Canmore, and an open invitation to let your imagination run wild. Solitude, the latest cave experience offered by Canmore Cave Tours, is designed for those seeking to build their very own underground exploration of Rat’s Nest Cave – and the options are endless.
Each Solitude excursion is unique, tailored around the caver’s own interests and individual wish-list, whether that’s a desire to take on a series of squeeze challenges, meditate 100ft underground, conduct a cave photography session, or explore part of the cave otherwise unseen.
Unlike Canmore Cave Tours’ daily group tours into the cave; the 6hr Adventure Tour
, and the 4hr Explorer Tour
, Solitude excursions are mapped out completely from scratch via a series of one-to-one conversations and planning sessions with a personal guide, who in turn, becomes a dedicated go-to for each Solitude caver.
“Solitude cavers will co-design with us, exactly how they’ll spend time underground”, says Max Koether, Canmore Cave Tours’ Guide and Experience Product Manager.
He continues: “As guides, we’re simply here to facilitate the journey throughout Rat’s Nest. This really is an opportunity to voyage through the cave and experience it in a completely personalised way.
We allocate six hours for each Solitude exploration, and there are no set rules for how we spend that time underground. If we’re convinced it’s 100% safe and that there’ll be absolutely no damage done to the cave – which is a Provincial Historic Resource and completely protected - we’ll go and do it.”
Cavers can reserve their Solitude expedition on any day, during any point of any season, with each trip open to a minimum of two people. Solitude cavers will meet their guide at the Canmore Cave Tours base, to make any final tweaks to the trip plan and collect their overalls and gear, before heading to the trailhead that leads to the mouth of Rat’s Nest Cave – which lies under Grotto Mountain, just a short drive east from the town of Canmore.
For Koether, who has been a guide with Canmore Cave Tours for three years, the Solitude experience is a way to get ‘off the map’.
“It’s much more intimate, with the freedom to take in the rawness of the cave.” Koether says.
With Solitude excursions taking place in the early evening, cavers will ascend from the cave into darkness.
“It definitely feels like an adventure,” Koether continues, “there’s something quite special about being the only ones underground for that length of time and then coming out from within the cave to a moonlit trail.
We’re excited to share the cave as we see it - it’s our way of taking cavers’ experiences of Rat’s Nest to a whole new level.”

Solitude is priced at $499 CAD per excursion, based on two cavers and including all equipment. The maximum group size is 8 persons, with a cost of $129 per each additional caver. For further information on Solitude, see here
