by Banff Lake Louise Tourism

SnowDays is back! This year, with even more temptations to embrace everything we love about the snowy season, there’s really no excuse to not take a Snow Day! Fuelled by non-stop fun, SnowDays has something for everyone. There are adrenaline-pumping activities to keep your heart racing and plenty of warm-hearted ones to keep your cheeks rosy. Whether you choose to frolic in the snow, marvel at towering ice sculptures created by world-class carvers, sip hot cocoa listening to live music or simply keep cozy by the fire with some of the tastiest treats Rocky Mountain Cuisine has to offer, the choices are endless!
Here’s what not to miss from SnowDays 2016:
Kick-Off Street Party featuring a live DJ
SnowDays starts with a bang on January 15 with a Kick-Off Street Party on Wolf Street.  Expect skating, ice carving, DJ sets and even an Ice Bar!
Ice Magic
An iconic SnowDays favourite, the International Ice Carving Competition brings the best of ice carving talent to Lake Louise on January 15-17.  You’ll be amazed and in awe, as carvers delicately balance gruelling physical labour with precision artistry during the fascinating ice carving competition.  This year’s theme is ‘Earth, Wind, Fire & Water – Elements of Life’ and promises to truly capture the imagination!  Meanwhile, the Little Chippers Ice Zone is perfect for the young (and young at heart) to take some inspiration from the professionals and chip, chip away!  Want even more ice in your SnowDay?!  Look no further, SnowDays has it covered.  Challenge yourself to make it to the centre of a 20ft by 20ft Ice Maze standing in Banff’s Central Park or seek out the fully-carved Ice Train, an ice locomotive located at Banff Train Station – both new to this year’s festival!  *Please note : tickets are required to visit the main ice carving site during peak visitation times, Saturday & Sunday January 16, 17, 23, 24 from 10:00am - 4:00pm
This SnowDays season, Banff National Park is getting serious about snowmen! Come along and see Banff’s largest-ever snowman take pride of place in Banff Avenue Square! Standing at over 16ft, ‘Rocky the Snowman’ - as he has been affectionately named – will be greeting passers-by and posing for snowman selfies!  Do you have a skill for snowman building?  Enter Banff & Lake Louise Tourism’s #SnowmanShowdown contest by sharing your most creative or impressive snowman, for a chance to win a trip to Banff and Lake Louise! Please see contest details here.
Banff’s Big Taste
After big days of snow-filled adventures, you need big taste!  Banff’s Big Taste, Banff’s only food and wine festival, is the ultimate après for the food-lover!  This year taking place over two nights in the heart of downtown Banff (January 28 and 29), the main sampling event brings together the finest tastes and tipples from seven signature Banff restaurants – covering off a smorgasbord of delicious bites, from Mexican to Farm-to-Table! The Maple Leaf, The Balkan, Park Distillery, The Bison, The Eddie Burger Bar, The Magpie & Stump and The Bear Street Tavern are all featured, as well as a sneak peek of Banff’s newest hot spot – High Rollers!  Also new to the festival this year, is a full tour of Park Distillery, Banff’s only craft distillery, combined with a spirit tasting and rotisserie hors d’oeuvres sampling – house made liquor meets camping cookin’! The Big Bear
A locals’ favourite, The Big Bear returns to Banff on Friday February 5 & Saturday February 6.  Head to Banff Train Station and take in the action - watch pro ski and snowboarders stomp out their tricks to the beats of DJs.  The fun continues all weekend with adrenaline-fuelled on-hill events and off-hill parties to see SnowDays out with a bang!
And so much more! These events and activities are just the tip of the iceberg! Skating, snowshoeing, dogsledding and XC skiing, Banff National Park is the place to get your full winter fix.  So go on, take a SnowDay - you’ve earned it.
