RBC Granfondo Banff Sold Out for Third Straight Year
by Banff Lake Louise Tourism
GranFondo Canada has announced today that the RBC GranFondo Banff has reached its capacity of 1,500 registered participants. The cycling event has sold out every year since the inaugural event was held in 2012.
"Cyclists have told us they're looking for a unique experience and Banff National Park delivers on that," said Neil McKinnon, founder of GranFondo Canada. "For the third year in a row, the RBC GranFondo Banff has sold out, proving that Banff is a destination hotspot for cycling enthusiasts."
In the 2014 event, there are participants coming from six of Canada’s provinces and territories and from sixteen states south of the border. Seven countries will be represented including Australia, Canada, Cayman Islands, New Zealand, United Kingdom and the U.S.
The RBC GranFondo Banff is very unique in that it takes place in a national park, where wildlife encounters are a common occurrence. In fact, the 2012 course was altered because a grizzly and her three cubs were feeding on berries along part of the course. For 2014, GranFondo Canada has designed six contingency routes in case a similar situation is to occur.
The event is held on Saturday August 23, starting and finishing in Banff. Registration for the 2015 event will be announced in September.
GranFondo's are mass participation cycling events that have enjoyed incredible popularity in Europe for decades. Loosely translated from Italian, GranFondo means "big ride." GrandFondo's appeal to cyclists of all skill levels - everyone from the competitive to amateur.
