Northern Lands Announces Biennial Festival Dates

June 14, 2016

Edmonton, Alberta -- The dates for Northern Lands: The Great Canadian Wine & Culinary Adventure have been confirmed for May 2-6, 2017.

The inaugural largest all-Canadian wine, craft beer, spirits and culinary festival held in 2015 was met with critical success and public sell-out, and organizers expect no less for the celebration taking place in the year of our country’s 150th birthday.
This showcase of our country’s finest producers will once again incorporate a marquee grand tasting with winemakers/brewmasters and principals, educational seminars, intimate producer events and a festival competition with the most internationally diverse judging panel to ever judge a Canadian wine competition.

Some of Canada’s finest agricultural land is in the Edmonton region. This is a farmers’ market city, with brilliant meat and produce. It’s also a culinary workshop, where some of Canada’s finest chefs launched their ideas. Today, Edmonton is in the midst of a food scene explosion, and Northern Lands is inviting some of the country’s best to come into town and mingle with them. So impressed with Northern Lands in 2015, one of Canada’s top chefs, Vikram Vij signed on to be the festival’s national chefs’ chair for 2017, a position guaranteed to attract this country’s best and most talented chefs to participate in next year’s festival.
Also new to the festival in 2017 is the presentation of a feature country, Italy, through the partnership with VinItaly. VinItaly is the world’s largest wine show attracting 130,000 visitors from 140 countries each year to Verona. It is the quintessential showcase for the Italian wine industry. VinItaly Canada – Edmonton (May 2-3, 2017) will be entirely dedicated to Italian wine and spirits (the Canadian wine events will take place on May 4-6). During the two-days, VinItaly Canada - Edmonton will boast a rich and engaging program that will include trade and consumer walk-a-bout tastings and producer dinners and events.

There will also be a number of educational tastings, seminars and masterclasses for trade and consumers explaining and broadcasting the great diversity of Italian wine grape varieties and wines led by Dr. Ian D’Agata and a number of international wine journalists and experts.
“Following the overwhelming response from winemakers, chefs, consumers and international journalists to the inaugural festival, we’re excited to bring Northern Lands back in 2017 to help celebrate our country’s 150th birthday”, says festival producer Gurvinder Bhatia.  “We’re also especially thrilled that VinItaly’s travelling show has chosen to make a stop in Edmonton, putting us on the map of culinary destinations alongside St.Petersburg, Moscow, Hong Kong, Shanghai, New York and Chicago.”
Details regarding participating chefs and producers, dinners and all other events will be posted on the website,, or by following the event on Facebook ( and Twitter (@NorthernLnds). Tickets for all events will go on sale this fall.
Northern Lands was created with the mandate to raise the profile of the Canadian wine, craft beverage and culinary industries locally, nationally and internationally; create the most significant Canadian wine and craft beverage festival outside of wine country; provide a superior quality educational and entertaining Canadian wine and craft beverage experience for consumers and industry; showcase Canadian food producers and chefs responsible for the innovation and quality evolution of the Canadian industries; highlight Edmonton as a culinary destination; and to raise funds for the High School Culinary Challenge and the Grateful Palate Fund (Edmonton Community Foundation).
