– Wood Buffalo Brewing Co. is taking a unique twist of fate from the May wildfires and turning it into something good for their community. The local Fort McMurray brewpub will literally distill “The Beast” into whisky, and is hosting an event on Friday, October 28
in partnership with the Fort McMurray Fire Fighters Association to introduce this special spirit and rally support for the Friends of the Fort McMurray Firefighters Charities Association.
“We had a pallet of peated malt on the patio that was exposed to the wildfire and weren’t sure how it had fared. So we had the pallet tested and it passed approval for use.” explained Adam Solar, general manager of Wood Buffalo Brewing Co.
“We knew we had something special here, so decided to distill a whisky made 100% from this malt. It’s an opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come as a community. In honour of the firefighters saving the city and making this whisky possible, we want to move that legacy forward - that’s where the giveback comes in. Our local fire fighters have been with us every step of the way and when we shared our initial idea, they jumped in to help brainstorm the name and even wanted to be part of the event.” explained Spike Baker, head brewer for Wood Buffalo Brewing Co.
“So on Friday, we’re going to kick off distilling The Beast; a double smoked, 100% peated Canadian malt whisky embodying the spirit of our community and we’re going to make a great big fuss about it.” said Baker.
Special guests for the evening include Eddie Douglas, Commercial Director of Bairds Malt all the way from Scotland and of course the heroic Fort McMurray Firefighters.
The Beast Whisky will take five years to age and part of the proceeds of sales will go to support the Friends of Fort McMurray Firefighters Charities Fund. In addition, Wood Buffalo Brewing Co. will provide 10 bottles per year for auction at initiatives supporting victims of the wildfire.
“People from around the province are invited to join us as a way of acknowledging our strength, perseverance and everything we overcame together. This night is for us all to pause, reflect and collectively let our hair down.”
Together with Canada Malting and AP Capitol, Wood Buffalo Brewing Co. ensured the malts’ quality.
