Following its summer 2017 launch in Canmore, Alberta, the unique Mystery Towns adventure series is taking Western Canada by storm. It’s a clue-solving adventure game, and it’s transforming places and public spaces into a real-life puzzle board—and where you and your friends become the game pieces!
Instantly accessible via clues to your smartphone, each Mystery Towns adventure combines the fun of a scavenger hunt, the puzzles of an escape room, and the challenge of an Amazing Race.
As players solve their way across their city, they discover its icons, hidden secrets, and obscure attractions that even the locals don’t know.
“Just like an escape room, you’re cracking clues to solve a mystery. But instead of being stuck inside a locked room, you’re solving riddles leading you around the city, indoors and outdoors,” says founder, Andrew Nickerson.
A total of twelve Mystery Towns adventures are available across five cities: Canmore, Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, and Victoria and Vancouver in British Columbia.
Each adventure varies in length (from 1.5-5 hours, covering between 2.5-5.5 km of leisurely walking), and weaves a location-specific mystery for players to solve.
“A big part of the fun is the hidden-gem places you stumble upon as you solve each clue,” Nickerson says.
“Whether you’ve been there 20 years or 20 minutes, you’ll find yourself in obscure corners of your city that you’ve likely never heard of—and might otherwise miss out on. So, it’s a unique experience for locals looking for something new, and a whole lot of fun for visitors or newcomers to the area.”
HOW IT WORKS: Instantly unlock the adventure via text or app on your smartphone, and see your city transform into a series of cryptic (and sometimes baffling) clues. From the start location, you’ll follow a trail of clues through the city’s most unique historic areas, to uncover the mystery—before time runs out! *See below for more details.
WHAT YOU NEED: All you need is a group of 2-4 people (recommended), and your charged cellphones. Dress for the weather and wear walking shoes. Costs vary by game, ranging between $49 and $99 per team (divided between a group of 4 players, that’s under $20 per person—great value for multiple hours of fun in the city!).
Nickerson says each Mystery Towns adventure is designed to be extremely flexible—with players starting on their own terms during a set time window (e.g. between 11 am and 5 pm), on any day of the year.
“We’re tapping into that sense of play that we all had as kids – only this time the game is lifesized. And now you might even find yourself inside fun shops and pubs along the way,” Nickerson says.
While players can expect a thrill, Nickerson says they should also prepare for a challenge.
“Players beware: we cannot be held liable for relationships damaged by riddle rage! Get ready to think, frown, grin, laugh – and maybe even bicker – as you solve each clue,” he cautions (tongue firmly in cheek).
Mystery Towns will also launch new editions in Banff and Fort McMurray, Alberta—coming soon in 2018. Custom adventures are also available in each city, for corporate team building, group events and parties.
