Marmot Basin is set to open this Friday, November 15, launching its 50th
anniversary season. Marmot had first targeted November 9th
as the opening date however, warmer than normal temperatures in October delayed the snowmaking schedule forcing a one week delay. Now that temperatures have returned to seasonal norms, snowmaking has been ongoing around the clock for over a week and November 15 is now the confirmed opening date for the 2013-14 season.
Before installing a state-of-the-art snowmaking system in 2006, Marmot Basin depended entirely on natural snowfall to get the area open. Now, with a robust snowmaking system in the lower half of the mountain, Marmot Basin opens annually in early to mid-November and remains open into early May. “We will open with five or six runs in the lower area and three lifts will be operating”, reports Brian Rode, Marmot’s VP of Marketing and Sales. “We have had 40 cm of natural snowfall so far this season and we may be able to open more runs on November 15th
if we get more snowfall before then”, adds Rode.
This is a milestone season for Marmot Basin and for Jasper. Marmot Basin is celebrating its 50th
anniversary and it is the 25th
anniversary of the ever-popular Jasper in January Festival. To mark the occasions, Marmot Basin and the community of Jasper are celebrating with events and specials throughout the winter. Many of the events will take place during the Jasper in January Festival from January 18 - February 2 and Marmot Basin will also host a “homecoming weekend” from May 2-4, 2014. A full listing of events will be posted online at www.jaspercelebrates.com
with more events being added throughout the season.
