In Pursuit of Chocolate

GET YOUR FIX IN CALGARY
by Julie Van Rosendaal

Calgarians have a long-running appreciation for good quality chocolate. The city is like a box of chocolates; you might not know what you’re gonna get – but you’ll know the getting is good.

Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut
Chocolaterie Bernard Callebaut has been a sweet institution since the first store opened in 1983. Now owned by Cococo Chocolatiers, many of the chocolates they produce in their Calgary factory (and flagship store) are the same ones that made them famous in the eighties. Try the classic hazelnut cup – the dark chocolate cup filled with hazelnut paste has been on offer since the beginning.

Olivier’s
Having operated a candy factory here since 1909, Olivier’s is Calgary’s version of Willy Wonka. The Inglewood institution makes their own version of delicious hedgehog chocolates – never mind seconds, you’ll want thirds!

Papa Chocolat
After 27 years running his chocolatier, Bernard Callebaut has reinvented himself as Papa Chocolat, crafting a new, smaller line of high quality chocolates filled with unique, hand-picked ingredients. Try the Winston (as in Churchill) – a dried grape marinated in fine malt whiskey, then wrapped in semi-sweet ganache and tucked into a shell.

Fresh, small batch, premium chocolate is crafted daily onsite in this boutique chocolate haven in downtown Edmonton. Inspired by what is fresh and available, as well as by the changing influences of the best chocolate in the world, creations and flavor profiles change regularly.
