The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) has announced that it will host its annual conference, Sport Events Congress, in Edmonton in 2014. Edmonton was one of three Canadian cities that bid to host the CSTA’s flagship event and Canada’s largest annual gathering of sport, tourism professionals and event management firms.
Sport Events Congress attracts over 350 delegates each year and has been held in Ottawa, Gatineau, Toronto and Richmond in the past. Edmonton beat out Saskatoon and Regina which were also heavily considered as host cities. All three cities went through a rigorous bid evaluation process conducted by a selection committee steered by CSTA.
"The City of Edmonton is committed to working with the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance to ensure that its first ever Albertan congress is a huge success," said Candice Stasynec, Executive Director, Office of the City Manager. "Hosting the 2014 Sports Event Congress in Edmonton will support the ongoing development of high performance sport and sport tourism in our province. It will also be a major boost for our local tourism industry and for our goal of establishing Edmonton as a premier national and international centre for sport hosting.”
Janna Tominuk, Executive Director of Edmonton Tourism says, “We are honoured to have been selected as the host city for CSTA’s 2014 Sports Event Congress and are committed to working together as a team to deliver an exceptional event. This win for Edmonton is another example of our ability to host national and international events and how we continue to secure prestigious events which provide tremendous economic stimulus in our region.”
“The city of Edmonton has a long and proud history of hosting successful national and international sport events”, said Rick Traer, CEO of CSTA. “Edmonton is well positioned to host Sport Events Congress and we look forward to working with the sport and tourism industry partners throughout the province to ensure that the 2014 Congress is the most successful to date.”
Sport Events Congress 2014 will be held April 1-3 at the Shaw Conference Centre, located in the heart of downtown Edmonton overlooking the beautiful North Saskatchewan River Valley. The centre is Edmonton’s premier conference venue, with a prime downtown location that provides access to shopping, entertainment, dining, and transportation. In addition, selected events will be held at the Courtyard Edmonton Hotel and West Edmonton Mall.
