Jurassic adventures are easy to come by in Alberta. No other spot in North America boasts so many dinosaur species and complete skeletons as what’s been uncovered in the province. Dig into the prehistoric past with these unique experiences:
  • After admiring a few of the 110,000 fossil specimens inside the world-renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum just outside Drumheller, families can snore with the dinosaurs in an overnight camp-in program. Or try your hand a fossil casting or make your own fossil replica during a hands-on workshop.
  • Near Grande Prairie, the Philip J Currie Museum offers visitors a chance to morph into palaeontologists for a day, removing dinosaur fossils from the rock that encases them. Within the Fossil Preparation Lab, the assistant curator walks you through the process of preparing fossils to be used for future study.
  • Alternatively, take their weekend bus tour in July or August to nearby Pipestone Creek Bone Bed, one of the densest dinosaur bone beds in the world and active dig site (the size of several football fields!). Watch real palaeontologists at work. Chat them up and admire their findings. They don’t mind!
Within minutes of walking around UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dinosaur Provincial Park in the Canadian Badlands, you’re apt to spy fossils, but you’ll have a better chance of discovering them on an interpretive tour. Participate in a fully authentic dig on one, two or three day guided excavations. Or head out on the Centrosaurus Quarry Hike or sunset photography tour. Walk in the steps of the horned dinosaurs that lived here over 76 million years ago.
