Best Places to Pop the Question in the Canadian Rockies

February 13, 2015

By Ashley Meller

According to Wedding Bells magazine, 1 in 3 couples get engaged between the months of December and February. And it’s not hard to see why: winter is the perfect season for romance, especially if you happen to be in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. At this time of year the snow-covered peaks, dazzling sunsets, cozy cabins and sumptuous restaurants are practically calling out to couples in search of the amorous atmosphere befitting such an important occasion. And that got us to thinking about what elements make for a great place to pop the question.

Here are some things to consider when selecting a location to propose to your significant other:

Privacy and Noise Levels
Choose a place that’s going to offer you a reasonable amount of tranquility and privacy for the big moment. Selecting a location where you can focus entirely on your partner, away from crowds (especially if you have no interest in being photographed by tourists) will make the lead-up to the big moment less stressful. A quiet place also avoids the awkwardness of having to half-shout the question, or, worse still, that your partner will mishear you.

Banff: Mount Norquay Meadow
Lake Louise: Johnston Canyon, Upper Falls
Jasper: Lac Beauvert at The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge
Canmore: Mount Engadine Lodge

A Beautiful Backdrop
If you’re planning to hire a photographer to capture the special moment, choosing a place that will make for stunning photos is a very important consideration. A beautiful viewpoint works especially well, or a lush, uniformly textured backdrop of natural elements (a forest of trees, a rock wall). Also, good light is important for great photos, so if the spot you've selected is outdoors try to avoid flat mid-day light – opting instead for dawn or dusk, when the natural light is the softest and most flattering. And if you’re planning an indoor proposal try to pick a space with lots of natural, diffuse light.

Banff: The Summit Walk at the top of the Banff Gondola
Lake Louise: The skating rink on frozen Lake Louise (you can rent ice skates at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise)
Jasper: Medicine Lake Viewpoint
Canmore: Spur Line Trail Bridge, looking towards the Three Sisters

A Walk Back in Time
“Will you marry me?” is probably one of the most profoundly personal questions a person will ever be asked, so it's a throughtful gesture to incorporate an important element of your relationship into the proposal. Perhaps your first date involved a particular activity that you could weave into your plans, or you remember the type of wine you first shared. Just having a bottle of that vintage on hand can help bring to life the journey you’ve been on together that has ultimately led you to this very moment and make the proposal even more personal.

For skiers: Mid-mountain Whitehorn Lodge at The Lake Louise Ski Resort
For wine lovers: The Post Hotel Wine Cellar

A Memorable Meal
Stirring the senses of taste and smell are actually scientifically proven to help imprint a memory, so it’s no wonder that a lot of proposals are done over a decadent meal. If you’re going to pop the question over dinner, make sure to select a place with a stellar reputation and contact them in advance to let them know of your plans and to arrange any assistance you may need. Most restaurants are happy to be part of this auspicious moment in people’s lives, but informing them last-minute as you arrive puts a lot of pressure on the staff to help get the moment just right. And for goodness sake, please don’t try to put the ring in the food or their drink. If movies have taught us anything it’s that this idea rarely ends well.

Banff: The Bison Restaurant
Lake Louise: Mount Fairview Dining Room at Deer Lodge
Jasper: The Pines Restaurant at Pyramid Lake Lodge
Canmore: Crazyweed Kitchen
