Interstellar - Christopher Nolan’s new film was partly filmed in various locations around Alberta, debuts in theatres around the world this month.

The awe-inspiring landscapes of Alberta, Canada have added yet another blockbuster movie (and rumoured Oscar® contender) to their list of on-screen appearances with the highly anticipated film Interstellar
, from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan.
Nolan, best known for his work on the Dark Knight
trilogy, returned to film in Alberta after previously featuring the province’s Fortress Mountain
in Kananaskis Country
in his 2010 hit, Inception.
, a sci-fi epic starring Hollywood actors Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine, tells the story of a group of explorers preparing to embark on an interstellar voyage into the
unknown after planet Earth becomes inhospitable to human life. The film features a number of Alberta locations including Calgary
, Fort Macleod
, and Nanton
, standing in for the earthly home of the lead character portrayed by McConaughey, Cooper, and his family. The main street of Fort Macleod
was notably transformed into a sun-bleached, dust-bowl town [SEE PHOTOS
], and the location of a suspenseful scene involving a dust storm. In other scenes, Alberta’s famous golden prairies, rolling foothills
and distant mountain peaks
are on display as the backdrop for the film’s first act.
During filming in Alberta, which took place from August 6 to September 9, 2013, cast member Jessica Chastain posted photos of a personal trip to Alberta’s own Lake Louise on her Facebook page
, stating, “One of the best parts of my job is discovering areas of the world that were previously unknown to me.”
The film, already dubbed “One of the most sublime movies of the decade,” by the Associated Press, premiered on October 26, 2014 in Los Angeles, California and is scheduled for wide release in the US and Canada on November 5, 2014. Release dates in the UK, Germany, The Netherlands and South Korea are set for November 6, 2014, while the film will make its way to China on November 12, 2014 and Japan on November 22, 2014.
