(Calgary, AB – May 23, 2017) At event held this morning at Calgary’s Kensington Riverside Inn, Alberta Food Tours, Inc. (AFT) launched #EatAlberta150, a province-wide Instagram contest designed to increase awareness of Alberta as a food destination, to showcase our amazing partners and to engage Alberta food lovers in building our province’s bountiful food story as we celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday.

Running June 1 – August 7, 2017, the contest is simple. Participants throughout the province – from big cities to farmers in their fields - are encouraged to share photos of their favourite Alberta foods on Instagram using the hashtag #EatAlberta150.

“Beef, bison, canola, honey, Red Fife wheat, root vegetables and Saskatoon berries were identified as signature Alberta foods in 2015 by our colleagues at the Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance. Now we want to continue the conversation and involve as many Albertans as possible to share the bounty we enjoy here,” states Alberta Food Tours president Karen Anderson.

There will be 150 prizes from over 30 AFT partners awarded throughout the contest duration with two prizes awarded daily and 16 prizes awarded over each of the long weekends. Plus, every winner receives a cupcake from Crave Cookies and Cupcakes (it’s a birthday party after all). Five grand prize draws awarded on August 7 include packages from Edmonton’s Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, Canmore’s Paintbox Lodge, CRMR’s Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff and Calgary’s Hotel Arts Group.

Lauren Telfer, Director of Marketing & Public Relations with Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts states, “CRMR is extremely excited to sponsor a grand prize for the Eat Alberta 150 contest, as sharing culinary experiences is an integral component of exploring a destination and learning about local culture and history.”

Food tourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry which provides an $8 billion economic impact to Alberta each year. Calgary recently hosted Rendez-vous Canada, Destination Canada’s premier international tourism marketplace and as one of the delegates noted, Alberta’s food is “to die for” and through this contest AFT hopes that Albertans, Canadians and those from around the world will see how valuable our food industry is a
tourism draw.

Brad Smoliak, owner/chef of Edmonton’s Kitchen by Brad states, “I host long table dinners in Elk Island National Park as it provides a great stage to showcase our food. I hope to share Alberta's food with rest of the world so they can taste for themselves the difference that the purity of our land, air and water makes in the taste.”

“Alberta is not only visually stunning with its rolling foothills, Rocky Mountains, prairies and boreal forest but this landscape offers equally interesting and flavourful ingredients for chefs to craft diverse dishes to showcase the terroir,” states Calgary’s Rouge Restaurant executive chef and co-owner Paul Rogalski.

As a special birthday gift for Canada150, anyone booking a ticket to any Alberta Food Tour in Calgary, Canmore or Edmonton this season will receive 10% discount on their purchase by using the promo code eatalberta150 at checkout. Visit albertafoodtours.ca to see details on all 10 tours.
