A CANADA FIRST, CRAFTED IN THE HEART OF BANFF: A FRESH NEW TAKE ON TIMELESS COCKTAILS
PARK DISTILLERY LAUNCHES CANADA’S FIRST CRAFT-DISTILLED, BARREL-AGED COCKTAIL SERIES
Wednesday November 1, 2017 (Banff, Alberta) -
Park Distillery has today introduced Canada’s first craft-distilled, barrel-aged cocktail experience; under the label, ‘Distiller’s Series’. As the only craft distillery in Canada to age blend cocktails in oak barrels for six months for a unique, richer flavour, Park’s first batch of the Distiller’s Series is now ready to be enjoyed - while stocks last.
Usually seen in the classic bars of San Francisco and New York, Banff-based Park Distillery is shaking up the Canadian industry with the launch of its latest spirits line, with Albertans and visitors to Banff National Park now able to sip on authentic barrel-aged classics, one of the biggest mixology trends today.
The ‘Distiller’s Series’ is the latest product to be added to Park Distillery’s award-winning selection
of small-batch, signature ‘Made in Banff’ gins, vodkas and unaged rye spirit, and takes inspiration from the world’s classic cocktails. The series launches with three 375ml limited-edition varieties; the Negroni,
the Alpine Martinez
, and the Glacier Manhattan
“Good times – and things – come to those that wait, as they say,” smiles Matt Hendriks, Park Distillery’s Master Distiller.
For a limited time, Park Distillery will be offering a tasting flight experience of the three Distiller’s Series’ barrel-aged cocktails at its Restaurant + Bar. Designed by Hendriks to be a cocktail aperitif, three 1oz Distiller’s Series cocktail samplers will be poured and served on a wooden tasting board.
“It’s intended to be a really fun, social experience. We’re going to be recommending it to our customers for the start of the evening or as a pre-dinner tasting, as the cocktails open up the palette,” Hendriks says.
Each of the cocktails within the Distiller’s Series has been prepared by hand at Park Distillery’s bottling room, using its quality craft-distilled spirits. From three barrels - one for each variety - only 250 bottles of the first Distiller’s Series’ editions are currently available.
“I’ve been following the trend of barrel-aged cocktails for the past five years, especially in the US, where the modern, barrel-aged cocktail was born,” says Hendriks.
He continues: “There’s a revived appreciation for quality spirit cocktails – the Old Fashioned
and The Manhattan
are back with a vengeance. With this increased appetite for the classics, we just couldn’t resist the temptation to create our take on the barrel-aged trend.”
The mixology movement of barrel-aging cocktails began with renowned bartender Tony Conigliaro, from London’s 69 Colebrooke Row, being visited in 2009 by Jeffrey Morgenthaler - a fellow bartender from Portland’s acclaimed Clyde Common. Conigliaro had been aging Manhattans in glass containers, and Morgenthaler was excited by the resulting taste. This inspired Morgenthaler to start experimenting himself – but in oak barrels.
Soon after that, The New York Times
wrote about the barrel-aged cocktail, and so the trend started.
“By aging the cocktails in white oak, we’re infusing the ingredients for a deep, rich profile and a smooth finish,” Hendriks explains.
“It’s an enhanced taste. We’re really excited about the line, and to see the response to it,” he adds.
The Distiller’s Series will be Park Distillery’s barrel-aged. classic cocktail product line, all hand-crafted with Park’s award-winning spirits – with plans for other variations already in the works.
“I’ve been eager to release a signature barrel-aged cocktail series for a while,” adds Hendriks, “and we’re excited to keep experimenting with other classics. I have my mind set on creating a beautiful barrel-aged Sazerac [a New Orleans' cocktail created in the mid 19th
century and typically made with rye whisky]”.
As the Distiller’s Series is mixed and bottled in the Distillery as a ready-made beverage, Canadians can now sip on a classic cocktail that has been hand-crafted in Banff National Park, at home, and the preparation is simple: Pour over ice, and stir, garnish with orange zest - no bartender or mixology know-how required.

Yannis Karlos, Operating Partner, Park Distillery adds: “We’re beyond excited to be the first craft distillery in Canada to be launching an authentic, barrel-aged cocktail line.
We have an incredibly creative distillery team, led by expert mixologist Matt Hendricks, and together we have a deep curiosity for where we can take the craft-distilled experience. The Distiller’s Series is our evolution on the classic cocktail, and we’re ecstatic that we can deliver a new taste experience that has been hand-crafted from scratch in Banff National Park - to enjoy here in the distillery, or for Canadians to have at home.”

We distill in the purest place on the planet. Our water originates at six glaciers high in the Rocky Mountains and gains minerality as it travels across rich limestone deposits. Our grain is sourced from high-altitude family farms in the Alberta foothills. We hand-mill, hand-mash and hand-distill to preserve the purity of our ingredients and only produce in small batch. Our spirits are like no other in the world, because there is no other place in the world like Banff.
